Youtube allowing topless girls?
Well, apparently yes– for now. In the recent music video for the song “Thinking About You” by Calvin Harris and Ayah Marar, there is an actress whom is seen topless– fully exposed breasts and butt for almost a full minute– and there are other scenes of more taboo relationships (women with other women, stripping down to only underwear for another woman, an orgy, and teenagers literally fighting over a girl). And then there is the Justin Timberlake video “Tunnel Vision,” which features completely naked women. While both of these videos are not demeaning women nor objectifying them by exposing them– I find this to be more tasteful than some of the skimpy outfits they make women wear in other videos– this is a huge step forward for youtube and music videos.
While images and videos like this have been commonly accepted in Europe for years, in the US we are rather use to covering women up (maybe not in the classiest manner, but their nipples and crotch are relatively covered, right?). Rather than taking the videos down when they premiered, Youtube moved them to Vevo, their video partner, and now simply have a warning for parents before the video starts. Now, does this mean that more music videos will feature female nudity (or, oh my, male nudity?!?!), I can’t say. But does this make me happy to see? Yes, that we aren’t being such a prudish country that obviously enjoys sexual images (watch any television show, let’s be honest here), but likes to keep the reality of it hidden away. Let me be frank– we all need to grow up a little and be more honest about what really goes on between the sheets.
What do you think of this move for Youtube? Do you agree with it, or do you think these videos should be censored?

I saw this band live back in April when they came as the opening act for the spring concert at my college (the main performers were Group Love and I honestly was disappointed with their performance). Magic Man is a group of Rhode Island college students who formed a band with a 1960s flair. This is their song “Texas”, which you can download for free (along with their other single “Paris” at http://magicmanmusic.com/). They will be on tour with Walking the Moon for the next few weeks and make sure to check them out– they are very good (plus they were nice enough to take a photo with me and my boyfriend after the concert).

What do you think of the song? What do you think of Magic Man? And do you have a recommendation for June’s song?
As some of you know, I have had not had a plethora of time to keep 1st on Trend updated like I do during the summer months. Well, that is due to being at college. I am currently finishing my first year at Susquehanna University and it has been incredible. So, I am uploading a video I made of me, my friends, the love of my young life, and my school. I could never thank everyone enough for including me and making me a member of their “family.”
Love you all and cannot wait until next semester!

To kick off April and the time when Spring actually seems to come around, I wanted a more upbeat and fun song than some of my previous ones. So, I chose Icona Pop’s, who is a Swedish pop DJ group, big single “I Love It (I Don’t Care)” and features (and was partially written by) Charli XCX. Although this song actually was released as a single in May of 2012. Despite this, the song did not take off in the US until recently when it was featured on the hit CW show, The Vampire Diaries, performed on Dancing with the Stars, and used in a Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) commercial.
I personally love this song for its simple lyrics, strong voices, and well played tempo/beat. It is easy to dance to and fun to just listen to as well.
WARNING: unlike the songs I typically upload on this site, this one does contain language some might find offensive. Personally, it does not bother me, but I want to give all fair warning. This song and visuals belong to Icona Pop and Charli XCX and TEN Music Group.
What do you think of the song? And what do you think of Icona Pop?
This song recently became a favorite of mine, mostly because it was played at a dance at my college when my I was dancing with my boyfriend and friends.
This is the second song done by Sia and David Guetta– the other song being the hit sensation “Titanium.” I really love the visual effects of this video and the song is very entertaining. As well, it is upbeat enough to celebrate the end of the winter season here in American (finally!).
What do you think of the song? And do you have a recommendation for April’s song?
Okay, let’s get sappy!
With it being February, the month people either love or dread, I decided to pick a romantic song. Rather than using an artist like Taylor Swift or Christina Perri, whom both seem to make a lot of relationship songs, I chose “Need” by Hana Pestle. I found this song from a video someone made on the movie Bright Star, which is one of my all-time favorite movies, and this song was used in the background. It complimented the movie and theme so well that I fell in love with the song immediately.
What do you think of the song? And what are your plans for Valentine’s Day?
This month, the song of the month is “The King and Lionheart” by Of Monsters and Men, who are a Swedish band known for their hit single “Little Talks.” This song has been used in the British show Merlin, which returns for another season this month, and the song has been gaining momentum since.
What do you think of the song? And do you have a recommendation for February’s song?
