Television Review: The Vampire Diaries season 4

I have been an avid watcher of The Vampire Diaries since it first premiered in 2009 and have fallen more and more in love with it. I love the characters– Damon especially–, the themes, and the campiness of the show.

Okay, now we will discuss the plot– so prepare yourself. The show focuses on the love triangle of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stephan (Paul Wesley), two brothers that are also vampires, and Elena, a dopple-ganger. But the show currently also focuses on Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) transition into a vampire and her confused affections for both brothers; Caroline’s (Candice Accola), Elena’s friend and fellow vampire, love triangle with Tyler (Michael Trevino), a vampire-werewolf hybrid, and Klaus (Joseph Morgan), an ancient vampire; Bonnie (Kat Graham), Elena’s friend and a witch, battling her use of dark magic; Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), Elena’s brother, struggling with his destiny of being a vampire slayer and seeing spirits; Rebekah (Claire Holt), Klaus’ sister, is struggling with her guilt over killing Elena and almost killing Matt; and Matt (Zach Roerig), who is Elena’s friend and only main character that is 100% human, struggling with his survivor’s guilt.

Okay, it is a complicated plot with a lot of characters, but it is a good show. All of the actors play their characters well and, while the show does play an emphasis at the love triangle at the center of the story, the show does not underplay any of the subplots or minor characters. What the big secret will be for this season, or who will end up dead by the end of the season (because there is one after in every season!) has yet to be seen. But I am looking forward to what shall enfold this season and how the characters will develop.

Do you watch The Vampire Diaries? Have you been watching since the beginning or are you new to the show? Do you like the season so far? And do you have a favorite character?
